Bringing Joy
|
By Nancy Grant
The sights, sounds and smells of a nursing home are neither pleasant nor enticing. But the people who are destined by health and circumstances to live out their last days there are still God’s children and our fellow human beings.
Our Home Group, desiring to “make a difference” with God’s love, sings at a local nursing home every once in a while. Not being very musical, we tried to pad our group a bit with real singers but were not successful. As it turned out, our audience is not very discriminating about our skill, but they do enthusiastically respond to our chosen hymns. We have discovered that people whose minds can no longer grasp new ideas, or who can’t carry on a conversation, or who do and say odd things, have a deep well somewhere inside with memories of old hymns. So they sing along with us as we proclaim the message of “The Old Rugged Cross” or “Great Is Thy Faithfulness.” We always end with “Jesus Loves Me” or maybe “Jingle Bells” if we get a request!
After about an hour, we circulate among the group, patting and hugging patients in wheelchairs. We feel like we pass on some of God’s mercy and compassion to the forgotten of the world.

It's Dad's Turn
Our Mother’s Day photos were a big hit, and we’d like to honor dads the same way. Do you have a great photo of you and your dad, or you and your children, or maybe even the dads in your family? E-mail us one photo and tell us who is pictured. As room allows, we’ll run the photos as part of our Father’s Day tribute! Simply e-mail your photo to lsexton@fbcmodesto.com or turn it in to the church office by June 7.
